Granville Street, between Smithe and Helmcken Streets, will be closed for the 'Granville Promenade' every Summer weekend
City Councillor Sarah Kirby-Yung doesn't anticipate COVID-19 being a problem over the course of the event
VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Granville Street in downtown Vancouver is being converted into an outdoor party for the first time this weekend, with part of the street being shut down for the so-called “Granville Promenade.â€
An idea formulated by Vancouver City Councillor Sarah Kirby-Yung and members of the downtown business community, it’s simple concept — a section of Granville Street, between Smithe and Helmcken Streets, is closed on Saturdays and Sundays for the rest of the summer.
“[To] create more people friendly public space in the city, and that involves shutting the street down to cars, for two blocks on Granville street, so that it can become a full promenade for six weekends this summer.â€
Despite other summer events including the Richmond Night Market being forced to scale back due to concerns over COVID-19, Kirby-Yung says they don’t anticipate this being a problem over the course of the event.
